What to look for in geopolitical OSINT tools

  • Primary where possible. The register itself, not a summary of it.
  • Dated. An as-of date on each fact, because states change and registers lag.
  • Comparable. The same field for every country, or comparison is guesswork.
  • Honest about coverage. A tool that says what it cannot see is worth more than one that fills the gap.
  • Exportable. Anything you will chart or model needs a download or an API.

How the tools complement each other

A change in a register is a fact; a change on the map is a report; a change in a strait’s traffic is a signal. Geopolitical analysis is the work of putting the three together and saying which is which. The registers give you the state as it is on paper, the shipping and imagery give you the state as it behaves, and the monitor gives you the state as it is being reported — and the discrepancies between them are usually where the analysis is.

What are the limits of open-source geopolitical analysis?
Registers publish on their own schedule and can be stale or, in the case of world-editable ones, wrong. AIS and ADS-B see only what broadcasts. Trade data is reported by governments with lags and gaps. Imagery shows structures, not intentions. Every inference from these signals should be labelled as inference.
